NBC Olympic Coverage - Disappointing (a rant)!

I am once again disappointed by the NBC coverage of the Olympic games.  Each time I hope that the coverage will get better.  This year once again, they are choosing to show delayed broadcasts of track & field and other events.  The men's 100 m finals will be run at 10:00 am East Coast time on Saturday, however, it will not be shown until Saturday night in prime-time.  I am a big fan of track and field and it takes the fun out of the events if you already know the results.  It will be difficult to avoid finding out the results all day on Saturday.  As we speak, there are qualifying events going on in track & field that are not being covered.  However, we never seem to miss any of the beach volleyball action.  Many swimming finals that are being seen live on the East Coast are being shown taped on the West Coast in primetime.

I honestly believe that NBC's desire to have a ratings bonanza takes away from the viewing pleasure of those of us who truly love to watch Olympic competition.  In my opinion, during these 2 weeks, every minute of the day should include Olympic coverage on several channels so that all sports get a chance to be viewed and so we are able to see more of the competition, not just sports or events in which US athletes are participating.  I think when we focus so much on just the US team we lose some of the spirit of the games which is to celebrate the best in the world, regardless of nationality.

Although I understand what you are saying; I feel it is still exciting to watch the events and witness the enthusiasm of the athletes and the crowds.

You hit it on the head "NBC's desire to have a ratings bonanza".  Remember, if they didn't have this desire, you wouldn't be seeing Olympic coverage at all.

It can be frustrating, but without the prime time ratings none of the networks would go to the expense of broadcasting the Olympics and we would be left with more hours of reality tv shows!

I guess I'm just used to it. I'm so excited about any event broadcasted that live or re-runs suit me just fine.  I do like the idea of several channels broadcasting different events.

LMAO at the beach volleyball action!  They might as well be showing the ping pong.

I agree about the track and field... one of my favorites.

Stacey-Ann...

I have been patiently awaiting the start of the Athletics events, and like you, I can't avoid knowing the results before the telecast. And I haven't seen any coverage of shooting, archery, wrestling .... what's going on?

If is frustrating but as with anything the $ rules and the ads pay more in prime time.  I hope you are still enjoying your favorite events andyway Stacey-Ann.

Stacey-Ann - I am in agreement with you, I like to see the stuff live, without having heard anything about it on the news. There is also way too much no event coverege for me. However, this happens every Olympics, polling must show that most people want it the way it is.

Sharon - I agree its exciting to watch the events I just wish I could see them live.

Kevin - I guess you are right

Tony & Darcy - more reality tv might be better than some of the olympic coverage.

Trunda - Several channels are great because at least you have variety.

Cameron - I think I might prefer ping-pong

Richard - There are many sports that we haven't seen.

Paddy - I'm trying to enjoy but its hard for me once I already know the results.

Mike - I was reading up and there seem to be many people unhappy with this year's coverage.

I think this is happening because if you Google "watch the Olympics live" you can pay to see all of the live  video streaming directly to your computer. Every event is covered. To me that is unfair -- it should be "free" to consumers because the advertising revenue sponsors the events and pays for it. Why should we pay to see the ads they paid to show us?

Stacey, I agree... it is disapointing that they dont show everything that we want to see live.  For me, there is NO sailing on TV at all.... I guess it just doesnt get the ratings...

I am still dissapointed that I missed Phelps last 2 medals!  ( I was in the woods this weekend camping and white water rafting with my son)

C - I'm with you.  I refuse to pay extra to watch it on the internet, that's just crazy.

Robert - I have noticed no sailing, I think everything should get featured.  Phelps had an amazing run, i'm very happy for him.

What can you do? They are in control period. The only other choice is to be there.
