We've come a long way!

The supermarket shopping experience has really changed drastically over the years.  I remember going to the store with my mom.  You put your items in your cart (trolley if you are from Jamaica), take them to the cashier, she would punch some numbers in to ring them up, someone else would bag them and then someone would take them to your car.

Then they invented the swipe to speed up the checkout process.  Eventually it got to the point where you bag your own grocery and take them to the car yourself.

Then, my grocery store implemented the self-checkout.  Now you ring up your items yourself and someone may or may not help you to bag them.

Yesterday, I went to my usual grocery store (Giant) and now they have something even better.  When you get in the door, you scan your bonus card and they give you a scanner and some bags.  As you pick each item off the shelf, you immediately scan it and bag it.  Once you are done, you take the scanner to a register and pay.  This reduced my shopping time by almost half.  The really neat thing about this is that it keeps a tally of what you are spending, no more violent surprises at checkout.

What will be next?

Stacey-Ann...

I guess the next thing will be that you pick up your items and your credit card is billed automatically as you walk out the door!

Stacey-Ann - That is pretty cool!  We don't have that gadget, yet.  I think it's a great idea...  :)

Stacey,

I have not seen this.  I would LOVE this.  I wonder if anybody has put stuff in the bag w/ out scanning it though?  I know our store is vary particular at self check out.  It measures weight and stuff like that.

That's amazing, I haven't seen that yet here, but it would be useful.  I  know I used to have my groceries delivered just because I could see my total rising while I shopped online.  That kept me from going overboard like I do when at the store.

Stacy, the next step will be: They'll have us stocking the shelves, too!

Richard - I've heard that it is coming.

Paddy - If you change your mind you can delete it.

Debi - It was really neat.

Livia - I always wonder if people will steal stuff.

Yvette - I agree, someone to put them away would be great.

Chris - I know that running tally is useful.

Alan - I'm afraid you might be right!

Stacey-Ann, I heard about that technology awhile back.  I recall there being a few stores in Maryland testing it out.  Apparently the testing is spreading.  It'll be nice when it spreads a few states down.  There's nothing more frustrating than standing in a long line to only by a jug of milk.
