A Showing First - The police

Today I was out showing some property with a couple from out of town.  We were on our 8th listing and they liked it.  It was one of two that had made the short list.

We had parked in the lot next to each other in two unmarked spaces.  When we went out, there was a minivan parked behind us blocking us both in.  We waited patiently for a few minutes and then began to feel annoyed that we were blocked in.

Suddenly this women comes out of her townhouse yelling at us for taking her parking space.  We tried to explain that we parked there because those spaces were unmarked and we thought that meant they were visitor spaces.  She went on with her tirade about us taking her space because the number has been rubbed off and we should have known because it didn't say visitor.  She proceeded to say that next time she would call the police.

In an attempt to difuse the situation I apologized to her for our mistake and asked her nicely if she would please move her vehicle so that we could leave.  She told me she would move it when she felt like and then climbed into her vehicle closed the door and sat there.

Can you believe we had to call the police before this woman would move and let us out?

Needless to say, the buyer immediately struck that property off the short-list saying "I wouldn't live next to her if this was the last property on earth".

This sure was a great way to welcome them to the DC area!

Oh my -- Actually, it is lucky this happened on the showing. What if they had bought the place and then found out about this LOVELY lady!

Stacy well sometimes it is better to go ahead and find these things out before your clients get in there and then find out and are uphappy.

I understand being territorial about property, but that is just crazy.  I hope you never have to call the police while on another showing.

How awful for you.  Sounded like you handled it like a pro, though.  Hope your buyers find another one they like quickly.

I would have MADE the police arrest her for detaining you.

Stacey-Ann,

What did the police do?  I hope they gave her a ticket.  I would definitely let the listing

agent know what they are up against.

Oh no, this is a first. It was good that you kept the situation diffused as it could have gotten out of hand.

Posted by Denise Williams (Prudential Woodmont Realty) about 1 year ago

Russ - I guess rude people are everywhere.

Silvia - clearly Mr. Seller has the right idea.

Jim - quite the welcome.

Paula - hopefully tomorrow's showings go smoother.

Melody - those were probably the same words I used in my head.

Posted by Dr. Stacey-Ann Baugh (Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc) about 1 year ago

Eau - it really could have been much worse.

Konnie - people are crazy about their parking spots in this area.

Jen - luckily house #1 is still available.

Kathy - crazy indeed.

Michael - that's crazy that you would need to even think about that.

Posted by Dr. Stacey-Ann Baugh (Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc) about 1 year ago

Nancy - seems like the sister (and this lady) are going to win.

Joan & Larry - Better find out about the crazy neighborhood BEFORE you buy.

Jim - I hope never to call the police again either.

Alisha - its really hard to be the listing agent in these types of situations.

Posted by Dr. Stacey-Ann Baugh (Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc) about 1 year ago

Heather - they did like one other listing so we'll proceed on that one.

Richard - Thanks

Brenda - I called the listing agent and he was stunned.  He also indicated that he always parked in those same spots, not anymore.

Cindy - just my luck.

Denise - you realize how easy things could spiral into violence.

HI STACEY!

Anything goes in D.C!  That's a big deal.  I bet the buyers are glad that happened...got a chance to see before it was too late!

Posted by YVETTE SMITH REALTOR IN WILLIAMSBURG VA WILLIAMSBURG VIRGINIA HOMES FOR SALE (LONG & FOSTER) about 1 year ago

Stacey, It's good this happened now rather than later.

Reminds me of a similar situation I ran into w/a showing.  Of course, the buyers loved it and were seriously considering writing an offer and of course the next door neighbor showed her true colors by yelling out of the window, at the top of her lungs, obscenities to the buyers' 5 yr old son who made the mistake of walking on her lawn.  Priceless.

Posted by Lanette Branch, - Bel Air, MD REALTOR (RE/MAX 1st Advantage Realty, Inc.) about 1 year ago

Yvette - definitely better to find out now than after you've bought.

Lanette - clearly they did not want a neighbor who would curse at their son.  There are some strange people out there.

Posted by Dr. Stacey-Ann Baugh (Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc) about 1 year ago

Stacey-Ann - Wow!  What a bizarre story!  It's hard to believe what some people do these days...  :)
