Do Military Personnel pay Security Deposits?

I was speaking today to a military client of mine who is looking for a rental.  He indicated that he had heard that military personnel did not have to pay a security deposit on a rental.  I had not heard that and I even have a military family renting my personal home and they paid a deposit.

However, I was wondering if anyone had more experience with this and could give me the correct information.  Is there something that allows military personnel to pay either no security deposit or a lower security deposit on a rental?

Answer--No.

Stacey, military personnel in our area pay a security deposit.  They can break a lease early with PCS orders, but that would probably be the only difference.

I have never had a military renter not pay a security deposit and I work with a lot!  What would make them exempt?  All military member should make sure that their lease containts a military transfer clause so should they get orders out of the area that they are protected.

Some landlords offer discounts to military members.  There is often a clause in the lease that gives them an out if they have to deploy or are given orders to move.  The military has their own network of attorneys and I would advise them to have an attorney review any lease before they sign.  The landlord should definitely be made aware that your client is a military member.  I grew up in the military and was married to a military man for 18 years.  I also have 2 sons in the marine corps and know that they have both had to break a lease due to deployment.  I hope this helps.

I have not heard of military personnel not paying a deposit either. Ask your client to show written proof of this very strange exception.

Certainly no law about it, although landlords may choose to do so out of patriotism.

I think someone is telling you a story.  Security has nothing to do with the type of tenant it is to protect the landlord's property.

I have heard about early termination for military transfer, but not any exemption for security deposit. I have had several military rental clients and they have always paid a security deposit.
